Seems like nothing good is coming out from my blog nowadays. Let's take a look at this statement. In large corporations, workers are like pawns, only to be manipulated. Whether you agree or not, it is extremely unfortunate that this event is unfolding right in front of my eyes. It is even more unfortunate that I am one of the perpetrators of this event.

Due to the economic downturn, it is inevitable that companies will want to save cost. Drastic times call for drastic measures. So it was no surprise that my organisation started to talk about retrenchment. And so I am handed the task to axe 25% of my people under me. The first time I heard this, I could not sleep at night. To be out of a job in this economic downturn is really unpleasant. It is with much regret that the names have already been submitted. The hammer falls right after chinese new year. Imagine celebrating a holiday, then going back to work the next day only to find out that you have been placed on the chopping block. This feeling utterly sucks.

How can I ever face them? True, I do not have a choice, but it does not change the fact that I was the person who selected the people. No matter what, part of the blame will fall on me. It is not because they cannot perform. It was just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In short, this is not a happy new year to me. I foresee more sleepless nights ahead. At least my hair has not started falling out yet.
